Abstract

This study investigates the manifestation of Zen principles and aesthetics within bamboo installation art, exploring its impact on the viewer's experience and comprehension of Zen philosophy. Recognizing a gap in existing literature, which primarily addresses Zen influence on traditional arts or the general use of natural materials, this research focuses specifically on the intersection of Zen and bamboo installation. The investigation identifies and analyzes specific Zen principles, such as mindfulness, impermanence, and emptiness, as expressed through the materiality, form, and spatial arrangement of selected bamboo installations. It examines how bamboo, with its inherent qualities of flexibility, resilience, and naturalness, serves as a medium for conveying Zen philosophy. Furthermore, the research explores the immersive nature of installation art and its potential to facilitate a deeper engagement with Zen concepts, considering the relationship between the artist's intention and the viewer's interpretation. The findings contribute to a framework for understanding and appreciating bamboo installation art through a Zen lens, highlighting its capacity to promote self-reflection and awareness. This study ultimately aims to enrich the understanding of contemporary art by illuminating the confluence of traditional materials, spiritual philosophies, and experiential aesthetics.
