Abstract

Hybrid connections provide alternative load-transfer mechanisms for precast concrete beams, but their performance depends on the interaction between steel connectors, reinforcement, prestressing, and concrete. This narrative review synthesizes experimental and numerical studies of steel-connected and prestressed hybrid beams, with selected beam-column and segmental-girder studies used as supporting evidence. The discussion is organized around connection configuration, flexural and shear response, cyclic behavior, and modeling limitations. The reviewed evidence indicates that appropriately detailed connections can approach the behavior of monolithic members, while local concrete damage, interface slip, connector geometry, and joint opening may govern performance. Prestressed bolted connections can improve flexural resistance within the tested configurations, although the benefits cannot be generalized across different materials and loading conditions. Steel components can support ductile response, but their presence alone does not prevent brittle concrete-controlled failure. Existing results remain difficult to compare because specimen geometry, loading protocols, and performance measures differ. Further research should combine matched control specimens, interface measurements, and experimentally validated models to clarify the effects of splice location, anchorage, and reinforcement continuity. A connection combining structural steel, lap-spliced reinforcement, and cast-in-place concrete is identified as a research direction requiring validation, rather than an established solution.
