Abstract

The Strengths Perspective emerged in the late 1980s as a significant critique and transcendence of the traditional problem-oriented approach in social work. This theory emphasizes starting from the potential and strengths of individuals, families, and communities, mobilizing resources, fostering collaboration, and restoring hope to empower clients as agents of change. This paper systematically reviews the theoretical origins, core concepts, and application status of the Strengths Perspective in Chinese social work practice, focusing on three key fields: mental health, elderly services, and child, youth, and family services. It analyzes the characteristics and limitations of its localized practice. The study finds that the Strengths Perspective in China shows field concentration and methodological diversity, yet also faces challenges such as conceptual generalization and insufficient structural response. Future development should promote the integration of the Strengths Perspective with problem-oriented approaches, and strengthen its theoretical awareness and practical reflection within specific socio-cultural contexts, so as to advance from "conceptual transplantation" to "localized integration."
