A Study on the Difficulties in Interpreting Culture-loaded Words of Fanshan Jiaozi from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

Abstract

To provide corpus for the foreign interpretation of Bashu folk dances, this paper takes relevant entries including official promotion documents of Pingchang County government, scenic area commentaries and Encyclopedia of Sichuan Folk Culture as research corpus. Based on the inductive research method and from the perspective of Skopos Theory, it sorts out and classifies four categories of culture-loaded words in the text: dance moves, folk proverbs, props and utensils, and regional folk customs. Combined with cognitive differences between Chinese and English cultures, it summarizes the core difficulties in interpreting culture-loaded words of Fanshan Jiaozi, including cultural vacancy of local imagery, loss of folk metaphorical connotations, chaotic translation of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) proprietary terms, and difficulties in transferring the semantics of folk performance rules. This paper also analyzes the root causes of these difficulties and puts forward targeted solutions. The study summarizes translation rules of vocabulary adapted to the context of cultural tourism publicity, which not only provides a reference for standardized interpretation of Fanshan Jiaozi, but also offers corpus for the foreign translation of similar local ICH cultural tourism texts in northeastern Sichuan and the overseas dissemination of regional folk culture.
